HYUNDAI INSTEROID: WHERE GAMING INSPIRATION MEETS AUTOMOTIVE DESIGN

The Hyundai INSTEROID is a gaming-inspired EV concept car that transforms Hyundai's INSTER sub-compact electric vehicle into a widened, track-ready show car with race-inspired aerodynamics, a stripped cockpit and an integrated retro arcade game experience. Unveiled in Seoul in April 2025 and later shown at gamescom 2025, it demonstrates how video game aesthetics are directly influencing next-generation automotive design.

What Is the Hyundai INSTEROID Concept?

The name combines INSTER, Hyundai's production sub-compact EV, with STEROID, signalling the concept's amplified, muscular character. INSTEROID builds on the standard INSTER body with a significantly widened track, extended wheel arches, a prominent rear wing spoiler, diffuser, wheel arch air flaps and 21-inch wheels. Every exterior modification serves a dual purpose: it communicates performance intent while referencing the exaggerated proportions of racing video game cars, where real-world aerodynamic logic and visual drama meet.

Interior: A Cockpit Designed Like a Controller

Inside, the INSTEROID replaces the INSTER's road-focused interior with a track-optimised cockpit. Bucket seats and a roll cage frame the driving position, while every control surface including buttons, switches and the instrument cluster has been redesigned to reflect the concept's gaming identity. Hyundai's designers describe the interior as fully adjustable, referencing the customisation logic of a garage-built track machine rather than a conventional road car interior.

The Arcade Game and gamescom Debut

Alongside the physical concept car, Hyundai developed a self-produced retro arcade game titled INSTEROID. Players control the INSTER base car, avoiding obstacles and collecting power-ups to transform it into the INSTEROID, mirroring the design story of the concept. The game debuted alongside the car in Seoul and the vehicle was later exhibited at gamescom 2025 in Cologne, making it one of the first automotive concepts to debut simultaneously at both a major motor show and a major gaming industry event.

Why Gaming and Cars Are Converging

The INSTEROID is not the first concept to borrow from gaming aesthetics, but it is among the most literal in its execution. The EV market is increasingly targeting younger buyers who have grown up with digital rather than mechanical references for automotive excitement. By turning the INSTER, a small affordable EV, into an INSTEROID concept, Hyundai demonstrates that emotional resonance with that audience does not require horsepower: it requires visual language.
