KIA'S PIONEERING PLATFORM FOCUSES ON THE INNOVATIVE LEAP BEYOND VEHICLES
At CES 2024, Kia unveiled its Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) strategy, a fundamental reframing of what an automaker builds and sells. Rather than positioning vehicles as transportation appliances, Kia is proposing a new category: modular, software-defined electric platforms that can be configured for different uses and that integrate with digital services across a user's entire daily life.
What Is Kia's Platform Beyond Vehicle?
The Platform Beyond Vehicle initiative is built around radical modularity. Kia describes the PBV platform as a blank canvas that allows users to redefine how space and mobility adapt to their needs. The practical expression of this concept is a family of electric vehicles that share a common underpinning but can be outfitted with different upper-body configurations: taxi, delivery, shuttle, workspace, or living space.
At CES, Kia showed five PBV concept vehicles, with the Concept PV5 serving as the near-production anchor. The PV5 is targeted for launch in 2025 and is intended for commercial fleet applications: ride-hailing, last-mile delivery, utility services. It is followed in the roadmap by the PV7 (a larger people-mover) and the PV1 (a compact delivery unit), both leveraging the same modular cabinet and frame system that allows different bodies to attach to the same skateboard platform.
The Technology Stack: AI, IoT, and SDx
The PBV strategy rests on Hyundai Motor Group's software-to-everything (SDx) architecture. This means that every PBV functions as a connected node in a broader ecosystem: it can receive over-the-air updates that alter its performance characteristics, interact with third-party applications through an open software platform, and adapt its interior configuration and functionality to the specific task it is performing at any given time.
Artificial intelligence sits at the center of the user experience. The vehicle learns individual preferences and routines, anticipates needs based on context (time of day, location, calendar), and integrates with smart home and enterprise systems. The result is a vehicle that Kia describes as a "personal assistant on wheels," a phrase that would have sounded like marketing language a decade ago but now describes a credible technical direction.
IoT connectivity extends the vehicle's sensing and communication capabilities to the surrounding environment. A PBV parked outside a building can serve as a mobile office, a delivery locker, or a last-mile charging hub, depending on the software configuration deployed on it.
Autonomous Driving and the Robotaxi Layer
Kia also previewed a Robotaxi model developed in collaboration with Motional, the autonomous vehicle joint venture between Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv. The Robotaxi is built on the same PBV platform and is designed to operate as a Level 4 autonomous hailing vehicle, removing the human driver from the equation entirely. This aligns the PBV strategy with the longer arc of autonomous urban mobility: the platform that operates as a conventional van today becomes a driverless shuttle as the regulatory and technical environment matures.
The emphasis on electrification throughout the PBV family is not incidental. The modular skateboard architecture is inherently better suited to battery-electric drivetrains than to combustion layouts, because EV powertrains are flatter and more easily integrated into a shared floor structure. The PBV program effectively forces Kia's commercial vehicle ambitions through an EV-first filter.
