Pi Bike - Carbon Fiber Takes a Piece of the Pi
The Pi Bike is a fully functional, fixed-gear bicycle shaped like the mathematical symbol pi, handmade from carbon fiber by designers Martijn Koomen and Tadas Maksimovas. It is one of the most unique bikes we have seen, turning a centuries-old fascination with the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter into a real, ridable object.
What is the Pi Bike?
For centuries, humanity has been fascinated by pi. This ratio between the circle's circumference and its diameter is what makes a circle a circle. The Pi Bike brings that concept to life in an unusual but creative way: a bicycle whose frame mirrors the pi symbol almost exactly. It is a carbon fiber, fixed-gear bike, both a design statement and a working machine.
Who designed the Pi Bike and why?
It is easy to tell why the bike is called Pi, with a frame nearly identical to the mathematical symbol. Inspired by Malaysian illustrator Tang Yau Hoong's drawing of a pi shaped bicycle for Pi Day, Koomen and Maksimovas decided to bring it to life as a real, functioning bike. Collaborating with the agency WE ARE Pi, the designers created it from scratch. It took numerous revisions to end up with such a sturdy, elegant, refined and functional bike, including new molds to cast the final frame in stronger carbon fiber.
