Rough Crafts "Indigo Flyer" - Ducati, Reborn

Rough Crafts "Indigo Flyer" - Ducati, Reborn - TheArsenale

Taiwan-based custom builder Rough Crafts has created one of the most compelling custom Ducati motorcycles in recent memory with the Indigo Flyer, a cafe racer built on a 2016 Ducati Monster 1200S that channels the visual language of the discontinued Ducati SportClassic line through modern engineering and a signature denim-blue finish.

Why Rough Crafts Chose the Ducati Monster 1200S

The Ducati SportClassic series ran from 2003 to 2010 and has retained a devoted following ever since. Rough Crafts founder Winston Yeh, based in Taipei, wanted to demonstrate what a modern successor to the SportClassic could look like. Rather than sourcing an original SportClassic as the base, he chose a 2016 Monster 1200S for its contemporary chassis, updated suspension, and the punchy L-twin engine that produces 147 horsepower and 91 lb-ft of torque.

The Monster 1200S platform gave Yeh a mechanically sorted foundation he could strip and rebuild aesthetically without compromising the underlying performance.

Bodywork Built from Scratch

Every piece of bodywork on the Indigo Flyer was fabricated from scratch. Rough Crafts deleted the factory Monster bodywork entirely and constructed new aluminium panels in a style that reads as a single monocoque form, with the front fairing mounted directly to the fuel tank to give that illusion. Carbon trim on the radiator cover, ignition surround, and rear fender comes from CNC Racing, adding visual precision to the hand-formed aluminium.

The 48mm Ohlins forks give the front end a more substantial, planted stance compared to the stock setup, and the combination of the wider front end and the tucked bodywork creates proportions the original Monster never had.

The Indigo Color That Named the Bike

Rough Crafts builds are almost always finished in black. Winston Yeh made a conscious exception for this machine, commissioning a denim-style blue paint with silver striping from specialist painter Air Runner. The choice gave the build its name: the Indigo Flyer. The blue plays against the polished aluminium details and the carbon components in a way that makes the bike feel simultaneously raw and refined.

As documented by Bike EXIF and Autoevolution, the Indigo Flyer demonstrates how a production machine can be convincingly transformed into something that reads as a completely different motorcycle while retaining all the performance of the original platform.
