SAMSON SKY'S SWITCHBLADE COMBINES MOBILITY WITH FREEDOM

SAMSON SKY'S SWITCHBLADE COMBINES MOBILITY WITH FREEDOM - TheArsenale

The Samson Sky Switchblade is the world's first road-legal flying sports car to successfully complete an official first flight, doing so on 9 November 2023 at Grant County International Airport in Washington State. Piloted by test pilot Robert Moehle, the vehicle was airborne for six minutes and reached 500 feet, demonstrating that the vision of a two-seat machine that drives on public roads and flies from a local airstrip is no longer speculative.

What Is the Samson Sky Switchblade?

The Switchblade is a three-wheeled motorised vehicle in drive mode, with its wings, tail surfaces, and folding propeller stowed within the body. In flight mode, the wings swing out and the tail extends in under three minutes, transforming the Switchblade into a light sport aircraft capable of using any compatible airstrip. The entire transition is designed to be performed by a single person without tools.

The design is the work of Samson Sky, a company founded in Oregon with the goal of making personal aviation practical for everyday owners, not just pilots with hangars and dedicated aircraft. Full details are available on the official Samson Sky Switchblade models page.

Samson Switchblade Performance Specs

In the air, the Switchblade reaches a maximum speed of 190 mph (305 km/h) with a standard cruise of 160 mph (257 km/h) and a range of up to 450 miles on a full 36-gallon tank of 91-octane pump gasoline. A 1,100-foot runway is required for takeoff, and the landing roll is even shorter at 700 feet, meaning the Switchblade is compatible with thousands of general aviation airports across North America.

On the road, the vehicle achieves speeds in excess of 125 mph, making it genuinely capable as a sports car between airports. The 3-cylinder, 1.6-litre liquid-cooled engine produces 190 horsepower, paired with a unique hybrid electric starting and taxi system. The Switchblade runs on regular pump fuel rather than leaded aviation gas, which both reduces operating costs and widens the range of refuelling locations.

Why the Switchblade Changes Personal Travel

The business case is compelling: a regional journey that would take 10 hours by car becomes a door-to-door trip of 3.5 hours when flying point-to-point, eliminating the inefficiencies of hub airports. For entrepreneurs and business travellers, the Switchblade enables the kind of mobility that private jets offer, at a fraction of the operating cost.

The recreational possibilities are equally significant. Island-hopping routes that require ferries or commercial connections become simple day trips. The Switchblade opens access to destinations that neither road nor commercial aviation serves efficiently. As New Atlas reported, the completion of the first flight marks a genuine milestone in the development of personal aviation.
