The Sony Honda Afeela 1 is the most technology-dense luxury electric sedan to reach the market in years: a $89,900 fastback produced by Sony Honda Mobility that combines a 483-horsepower dual-motor drivetrain, a 91-kWh battery with 300 miles of EPA-estimated range, 40 sensors for Level 2+ autonomous driving, and an entertainment system built on Sony's entire audio-visual heritage. It is not trying to be the fastest EV, it is trying to be the most connected.
The Sony-Honda Joint Venture Behind Afeela
Sony Honda Mobility was established as a joint venture between Sony and Honda in 2022, with the stated goal of creating a new type of vehicle that is as much a software and entertainment platform as it is a car. Honda contributes automotive engineering, production expertise, and the Ohio plant where the Afeela 1 will be built. Sony contributes its sensor technology (the same CMOS imaging sensors used in smartphones and cinema cameras), audio and display expertise, and its PlayStation and entertainment IP for the in-car experience. The result is a brand that positions itself above Tesla and alongside Lucid, Porsche Taycan, and the Mercedes EQS.

Powertrain, Range, and Charging
The Afeela 1 uses a dual-motor all-wheel-drive layout, with identical 241-hp motors at each axle for a combined 483 hp. The 91-kWh battery delivers 300 miles of range and accepts up to 150 kW DC fast charging via a NACS (Tesla-compatible) port, giving access to the entire Supercharger network across North America. Performance figures have not been officially confirmed, but the dual-motor configuration and power density suggest a 0-60 mph time in the low-four-second range. According to Sony Honda Mobility's official site, Signature deliveries begin mid-2026 and Origin deliveries follow in 2027.

AI, Autonomy, and the 40-Sensor Suite
The Afeela 1's 40 cameras and sensors (cameras, radar, LiDAR, ultrasonic) support what Sony calls Level 2+ driving assistance: the car manages steering, acceleration, and braking on highways, including automatic lane changes and motorway-to-motorway navigation. A future over-the-air update will unlock Level 3 autonomy, allowing the driver to take their eyes off the road in defined conditions. The dashboard spans the full width of the cabin and incorporates an AI voice assistant, multiple customizable visual themes, and Sony 360 Reality Audio. The Signature trim adds Dolby Atmos, rear-seat screens, and a premium speaker array. As Consumer Reports noted in its preview, the cabin represents a genuinely new approach to luxury in an electric vehicle.
