THE FUSION OF TRADITION AND TECHNOLOGY: A LOOK AT LIND ELECTRIC SURFBOARDS
Lind electric surfboards are the product of a California-Sweden collaboration that set out to solve one of surfing's oldest limitations: the dependence on natural waves. Founded in 2021 with an office in Stockholm, Lind bridges traditional surfboard craftsmanship with a modular electric drivetrain to produce a powered watercraft that behaves like a real surfboard while delivering speeds up to 40 mph. The result is a board designed to work on any flat body of water, anywhere, at any time.
Design and Construction: EPS, Epoxy, and Oak
Every Lind board is shaped from EPS foam, glassed in epoxy resin, and finished with an oak wood tail block and stringer. The construction follows traditional surfboard manufacturing closely, which is a deliberate choice: the boards are intended to feel and handle like real surf craft, not like jet skis or motorised platforms. At around 7 kg, the Canvas can be carried under one arm. Two sizes are available: the 6'3" shortboard (66 litres of volume) for maneuverability and the 6'9" mid-length (88 litres) for enhanced stability and ease of use.


The Modular Drivetrain: Battery, Jet, and Magnetic Fin
The Lind drivetrain system is entirely modular and designed to be assembled in under a minute. The battery, jet propulsion unit, and board are independent components that snap together without tools. The Lind Jet delivers 20 kW of power, with the twin motors spinning at up to 30,000 rpm for speeds reaching 40 mph. A custom magnetic fin slides into the jet housing and seals flush, eliminating drag during unpowered surfing. The long-range battery holds 3.1 kWh and provides up to 45 minutes of powered ride time. Battery energy density is described as twice that of a Tesla Model S, optimised for the weight and volume constraints of a surfboard.


More Than 50 Sensors: The Technology Behind the Feel
The Lind drivetrain contains over 50 sensors and microprocessors managing power delivery, temperature, and throttle response. The board communicates with a handheld remote that controls speed in smooth increments, making the learning curve accessible for intermediate surfers. The engineering goal is for the powered experience to feel as close as possible to unpowered wave surfing: responsive, immediate, and lean-controlled.
