The Valo Hyperfoil is the world's first electric hyperfoil personal watercraft, a two-seat machine that lifts entirely off the water surface on retractable underwater wings, delivering a riding experience that sits somewhere between a performance jet ski and a low-altitude aircraft. Built by Boundary Layer Technologies in Alameda, California, the Hyperfoil combines carbon fibre composites, titanium, and ultra-high-strength stainless steel into a 595 lb platform priced at 59,000 USD.
How Does the Valo Hyperfoil Work?
At the heart of the Hyperfoil is the proprietary SkyRide flight control system, which samples data and adjusts the hydrofoil control surfaces more than 100 times per second to maintain stability and balance at speed. This active stabilisation means riders with no prior hydrofoiling experience can get foiling quickly, unlike conventional hydrofoil craft that demand significant skill. The system rises approximately two feet above the water surface, eliminating hull drag entirely and with it all noise and wake.
The electric drivetrain produces around 80 kW (108 hp) and delivers a maximum speed of 42 mph, with a cruising speed of 25 mph. On a full charge achieved via a standard 240V Level 2 charger in approximately 3 hours, the Hyperfoil covers up to 68 miles at moderate pace. Retractable hydrofoils allow the vessel to be stored on a standard boat trailer and launched at any ramp.
Why the Valo Hyperfoil Matters for Electric Watercraft
The Hyperfoil produces zero emissions and zero wake, making it one of the most environmentally considerate personal watercraft on the market. Where conventional personal watercraft disturb shorelines and marine environments with persistent wake, the Valo leaves the water surface essentially undisturbed. This opens access to protected waterways where traditional combustion jet skis are banned, a growing advantage as more coastal regions impose wake restrictions.
According to Electrek, early production demand outstripped supply by a factor of three, and the initial 2024 limited run sold through rapidly. Manufacturing takes place in Alameda, California, using components sourced from the United States, United Kingdom, and New Zealand.
