Luminous Supercar 1984 is a mixed-media light installation by Flip Ziedses des Plantes, inspired by the 1984 Ferrari Testarossa and the vibrant subcultures of the 1980s, a life-sized artwork that fuses UV-reflective sculpture, fog, and ambient sound into one immersive object.
The Artist
Designed by the visionary FLIP ZIEDSES DES PLANTES design studio in Amsterdam, this immersive installation was a standout feature of a renowned exhibition and is now available as a collectible artwork. Ziedses des Plantes and his small design team assembled the piece in a matter of weeks, and during its debut it became a talking point during Paris Fashion Week and drew significant attention across social media, driving brand awareness for its exhibition partner FILLING PIECES. The result is a work that sits at the intersection of automotive homage, contemporary sculpture, and experiential design.
The Piece
Stepping into the dimly lit space, visitors are greeted by the life-sized Luminous Supercar 1984, seemingly materialising from thin air. Fog envelops the car, responding to the presence of viewers, giving it the illusion of floating on a magenta cloud. Ambient sound heightens the immersive atmosphere, transporting viewers to the vibrant energy of the 1980s. Moving deeper into the space produces a disorienting warp of perspective: the magenta contours shift, revealing that the car is composed of UV-reflective slices. These slices react to strategically placed UV lights, illuminating only the car's silhouettes while everything else falls into darkness. The interplay between emitted and reflected light produces an ongoing visual illusion, a minimalist statement about the very essence of light and the iconography of the 1980s supercar.
