The Midnight eVTOL: Specifications and Design
The Midnight is a five-seat eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft carrying four passengers and one pilot. It is designed to cover up to 60 miles (nearly 100 km) at speeds of up to 150 mph (241 km/h), making it ideal for intra-city and suburban routes where ground traffic makes travel slow and unpredictable.
The airframe is built from lightweight carbon fibre and toughened resin for maximum strength with minimal weight. Propulsion comes from 12 electric propellers arranged in a novel configuration: six tilt props on the leading edge of the high main wing handle both forward flight and vertical takeoff, while six fixed aft propellers assist VTOL only. The Urban Air Mobility Business Case
Archer focuses its commercial strategy on dense urban markets where traffic congestion is a daily productivity drain. The Midnight is optimised for back-to-back 20-mile trips with approximately 10 minutes of charging in between, a cycle that supports high daily utilisation. By building a ride-sharing air taxi network rather than selling individual aircraft, Archer aims to bring flight costs within reach of a broad urban population, not just private aircraft buyers.
United Airlines placed a $1 billion order for Midnight aircraft, with an option for a further $500 million, lending credibility to the commercial model. From Maker to Midnight: Key Milestones
Archer's technology demonstrator, named Maker, completed its first flight in December 2021, validating the core propulsion concept. The full-scale Midnight production aircraft subsequently completed its first transition flight, the critical manoeuvre of shifting from vertical to horizontal flight, in 2024. In August 2025, Midnight completed a 55-mile piloted flight in approximately 31 minutes at speeds exceeding 126 mph, an important step toward FAA type certification.
Archer partnered with Fiat Chrysler Automotive (now Stellantis) for manufacturing design and engineering support, bringing automotive-scale production expertise to the programme.
