NICHOLS N1A: A SYMPHONY OF POWER AND ELEGANCE
The Nichols N1A is a limited-edition British roadster built by motorsport engineer Steve Nichols, the man responsible for designing Ayrton Senna's championship-winning McLaren MP4/4. Inspired by the McLaren M1A Can-Am racer of the 1960s, the N1A translates that era's open-cockpit racing philosophy into a road-legal machine using modern materials: a carbon fibre and aluminium chassis clad in graphene-infused carbon fibre bodywork, keeping the curb weight to just 1,984 lbs (900 kg).
Engine and Power Output
The N1A is powered by a 7.0-litre V8 developed from a GM LS3 block, rebuilt with a dry sump, drive-by-wire throttle bodies, custom pistons, conrods, and steel liners. In this form it produces 650 horsepower, a figure that combines with the sub-900 kg weight to give a power-to-weight ratio approaching 700 hp per tonne. Drive goes through a six-speed manual gearbox to the rear wheels, a deliberate choice that keeps the driver fully engaged in every gear change. The combination of a naturally aspirated character, mechanical precision, and near-supercar power makes the N1A a proper driver's machine rather than a straight-line spectacle.
Interior and Craft
The N1A's cockpit is as focused as its exterior suggests. Precision-stitched upholstery, bespoke instrumentation, and an uncluttered dashboard reflect the ethos of the original Can-Am cars: nothing present that isn't needed, nothing absent that matters. The attention to hand-finished detail is consistent with a car conceived and built by a small team for a discerning audience, rather than optimised for volume production economics.
Production Numbers and the Launch Edition
Total production of the N1A is capped at 100 units, each built to order. Within that run, Nichols reserved a Launch Edition of just 15 examples, corresponding to the 15 victories the McLaren MP4/4 scored during its dominant 1988 Formula One season. All 15 Launch Edition cars have already been allocated. At $1.5 million per unit, the N1A occupies a rarefied space: a coachbuilt, engineer-led roadster with genuine motorsport provenance and the kind of production exclusivity that makes future acquisition increasingly difficult.
