TRANSFORMING URBAN TRANSPORT WITH HONDA'S NEW EV MODELS
Honda unveiled two landmark electric motorcycle concepts at EICMA 2024 in Milan: the EV Fun Concept and the EV Urban Concept. These models are significant not just as show bikes but as concrete previews of Honda's planned electric motorcycle range, with the EV Fun already scheduled for production. Both concepts signal Honda's intent to lead the transition to electric two-wheelers while preserving the riding character that has defined the brand for decades.
Honda EV Fun Concept: The Electric Sports Bike
The Honda EV Fun Concept is the brand's first electric sports model, designed to deliver a riding experience comparable to a mid-sized internal combustion motorcycle. Its most striking technical feature is the "naked" battery: a fixed pack compatible with the CCS2 quick-charging standard, visible as a structural and aesthetic element of the bike's design rather than being hidden beneath bodywork. This approach reflects Honda's philosophy of making electric technology a feature to celebrate rather than disguise.
The EV Fun Concept offers a cruising range of over 100 km, sufficient for urban and mixed-use riding. Its fixed battery enables fast charging at the same infrastructure used by electric cars, removing one of the barriers to adoption for urban motorcyclists who may not have convenient access to home charging. Honda has confirmed the EV Fun Concept for production, with the model scheduled to go on sale in 2025.
Honda EV Urban Concept: Electric Commuting Redefined
Where the EV Fun Concept targets the performance-oriented rider, the EV Urban Concept is designed for everyday commuters. Its softer, rounder design places the battery between the footrests in a partially enclosed configuration, lowering the centre of gravity and optimising weight distribution for low-speed urban manoeuvring. The EV Urban Concept features Honda's latest human-machine interface, an intuitive connected system that makes the motorcycle's information easily readable and actionable at a glance in city traffic.
Honda has described the EV Urban Concept as embodying a "near-future vision" of urban mobility that "cooperates and resonates with people and society", integrating both connected technology and Honda's in-house developed battery pack. A release date has not yet been confirmed, but the concept reflects the direction Honda's production urban EV will take.
Honda's Electric Roadmap: 30 Models by 2030
The EV Fun and EV Urban are not isolated projects. They are part of Honda's plan to introduce around 30 electric motorcycle and scooter models globally by 2030, in pursuit of carbon neutrality by 2050. Honda is investing across the full spectrum of two-wheeled transport, from small urban scooters to performance bikes, with each new electric model building on lessons learned from the previous generation.
At EICMA 2024, Honda also revealed its European model lineup alongside a high-performance V3 engine concept, demonstrating that electric expansion will run in parallel with continued development of combustion motorcycles. For Honda, electrification is an addition to its portfolio rather than a replacement for the riding experiences that have made it the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer.
