The Manta5 is the world's first hydrofoil bike, a pedal-assist electric machine that lets you cycle across the surface of lakes, rivers and the sea. We are used to seeing hydrofoils on boats and speedboats, but never before on a bicycle. Conceived in 2010 and brought to life with the help of bicycle designer Roland Alonzo, the Manta5 turns the dream of riding on water into a real, rideable product.

What is a hydrofoil bike?
A hydrofoil bike is a water bike that uses underwater wings, or foils, to lift the frame and rider above the surface as speed builds, dramatically reducing drag. Created by New Zealander Guy Howard-Willis, the Manta5 uses a 400-watt electric motor to assist your pedalling, driving a propeller rather than a wheel. It is equipped with two carbon fiber foils and buoyancy modules that keep it afloat when stationary, so you can mount and dismount on the water. The concept is detailed by New Atlas.

How does the Manta5 water bike work?
Built around an aluminium frame, the Manta5 weighs only 20 kg and can be partially disassembled for easy transport in a car. It suits riders from 70 to 100 kg and runs for around an hour on a full charge, though the battery is removable so you can swap in a spare. Just like a land-going e-bike, you can dial the level of electric assistance up or down depending on how hard you want to work. The official Manta5 range has since grown beyond the original concept.

How fast is the Manta5 hydrofoil bike?
Top speed sits between 15 and 20 km/h, which is more than enough for a floating water bike where the sensation of flight matters more than outright pace. The limited edition XE-1 debuted in mid-November and went up for pre-order in New Zealand, marking the moment the hydrofoil bike moved from prototype to a product enthusiasts could actually buy.
